Cheongryeonsa Temple
In the 1sth year of King Jangsu during the Goguryeo Period (416), Cheonchukjosa, a Buddhish monk from India, threw lotuses of five colors from the tops of Goryeo Mountain to find the right place to build a temple, and built Cheongnyeonsa Temple on the spot where a blue lotus had landed.
According to the historic record, the temple was reprared by the Buddhist monk Pogyeom in the 21st year of King Sunjo of the Joseon Dynasty (1821). After it got old and shabby, however, a big sanctuary was newly built in 1979.
The Wooden Seated Amitabha Buddha of Cheongnyeonsa Tmeple has the typical figurative characteristics of Goyeo's Buddhist statues of the 13th century, so it is thoght to have been placed in Cheongnyeonsa Temple as the main Buddha statue between 1232 an d1270, when Goryeo transferred its capital from gaegyeong to Ganghwado Island to avoid invasion by Mongolia. Since the statue clearly demonstrates the elegant and sophisticated beauty that Goryeo's Buddhist art sought at that time, it was designated Treasure No. 1787 in 2012.
